Preparing For a Long Trip Home

Preparing for a long trip home can be a lot of fun, but it can also present a somewhat daunting task to those who really don t like long car rides. Every year, thousands of people make the hike from New York to Florida without even blinking an eye. And what s more is that most of these people are above the age of sixty years old! If you can afford it, most people nowadays prefer to take an hour long flight versus having to drive 10 12 hours. In fact, the thought of having to drive such a distance has driven (no pun intended) many people to turn towards other alternatives such as auto shipping or car transportation services so that they will still have their cars once they arrive.

If you don t have the luxury of being able to ship your car, then you ll just have to grin and bear it when it comes to making the drive. Similar to running a marathon, it s best if you have the right mentality when it comes to driving. Provide yourself with healthy distractions in the form of little milestones along the way. For example, think of the trip in increments rather than as a whole. “I ve only got another hour to go before I arrive at destination X..” is much better than thinking “Oh geez another 10 hours of this!”

If you can, try to travel with a buddy or at least check in with someone at different points in the trip. It will help to break up the monotony of traveling. Additionally, you ll want to get out of the car and stretch your legs and get some fresh air every few hours or so. This also depends on how long your trip is going to be. For instance, if you are driving from North Carolina to New York, you may only need to get out of your car once to stretch, fill up with gas and eat versus if you are driving from California to Maine.

Planning your trip ahead of time will save you a lot of headaches during the trip. Of course, you cannot plan for everything. There will be accidents that hold you up and traffic depending on the day of the week and time that you are out on the roads. However, if you do a little research, you can figure out which roads are under construction, what times of day certain roadways become crowded, as well as plan for changes in the weather, etc. If you are a driver who gets tired easily, you may want to set your cell phone alarm to go off at certain times during the trip. Planning a great musical play list ahead of time to play on your car stereo also helps. Make sure that you put songs on the list that will keep you awake and upbeat versus those that you use at night to lull you to sleep!

Making a long trip to your final destination can be a drag at times, but given the right amount of preparation and forethought, it can be a pleasant experience that you look forward to time and again!
