Jamaica is a much sought out destination by those who wish to enjoy the Caribbean sun and rejuvenate amidst its scenic surroundings. A little bit of information about the country can make all the difference to your trip. Listed here are some fast facts about Jamaica that can help you plan your trip.

Driving: Jamaica follows a left hand drive. The speed in urban areas is 50 kilometers per hour while on the highway it is about 80. You need an international driving license to drive in the country. A UK driving license is valid for 12 months while a US license is valid for 3 months per trip. However it is not really advisable to drive on your own because the roads can be very rough. Also if the vehicle breaks down, you'll find it difficult to get help especially in the rural areas.

Clothing: Jamaica enjoys a year round tropical climate so take along light clothing and include shorts and swimwear for the beaches. For the winter months, carry a light sweater for the evenings.

Accommodation: You can book your stay in hotels, all-inclusive resorts and private Jamaica villas, apartments and cottages. Of these, Jamaica villas are ideal especially if you are traveling with family and groups. This is because you get your own privacy and space as also the opportunity to explore the island at your own leisure and pace.

Internet: You'll come across Internet kiosks in Kingston and other resort towns. If you have booked into Jamaica accommodation rentals, internet will be included in the package.

Food: The Jamaican population is a unique blend of people belonging to various cultures and ethnic groups whose influences are found in the cuisine. No matter what your tastes are, you'll find something to satisfy the palate. The national dish is Ackee and salt fish and while there you must also try jerked meat, including jerked pork and chicken that is the speciality in Jamaica.

Currency: The currency is Jamaican dollar. However it should not be confused with the US dollars which are also commonly accepted.

Weather: Jamaica enjoys year round tropical maritime climate with coastal temperatures ranging between 26°C to 30°C through out the year. The increase in altitude witnesses a fall in temperature, which hovers around 18°C in the Blue Mountains. The rainy season starts in May or June and extends through November or December with September and October registering the highest rainfall. However rain falls for short periods, normally in the late afternoon, after which the sun comes out.

Best time to visit Jamaica: Jamaica attracts visitors through out the year. However, the high season is between mid-December to mid-April, reaching a peak during Christmas and Easter. All rentals get booked during this season so it is advisable you book your Jamaica villas and cottages well in time. During the low season, which falls between mid-April to mid-December you can avail of special discounts on rentals and in stores and markets.
