Jhansi – a Historic City of Uttar Pradesh

Jhansi is one of the most historically significant cities of Uttar Pradesh. The city is known for preserving several historic monuments along with the sites having cultural and heritage value associated with them. The city of Jhansi gained fame as it became the center of resistance showed against the British during 1857.

The city is also associated with a great woman ruler of medieval India known as Rani Lakshmi Bai. It was formerly known as Shankargarh but later on it derived its name from the word jhain si which means blurred shadow. The city had been ruled by several rulers but it got great importance during the regime of Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. Later on the city was under the control of several rulers and then it was ruled by Raja Gangadhar Rao. During his rule, the city witnessed the all round development. But after the sudden death of Gangadhar Rao, Lakshmi Bai, his wife took charge of the city.

This marvelous city is situated right amidst the Betwa and Pahunj rivers offering great scenic views. It was considered as the gateway to Bundelkhand region. The city has a lot to offer to the guests apart from natural scenic beauty such as ancient monuments such as forts and palaces.Some of the most significant monuments in the city include Rani Mahal, Lakshmi Bai Temple, El Cid Vacations Club, Mahalakshmi Temple with Paricha Dam, Todi Fatehpur and many other prominent attractions.

Rani Mahal is one of the must visit attractions within the city of Jhansi. This magnificent palace has now converted into museum. This palace is like a treasure of memories related to Queen Lakshmi Bai. It also houses the artifacts and remains of ninth to twelfth century. This magnificent building was constructed late in eighteenth century. The palace is a double storied structure with flat roofs and courtyards. The second floor of the palace has a huge hall known as Darbar that is decorated with wood paneled ceiling. It has six grand halls in all and the most distinguishing thing about this palace is its multicolored paintings placed on walls and ceilings in order to decorate the palace.

Mahalakshmi Temple of Jhansi is an ancient temple of Devi Maha Lakshmi. This is one of the most stunning structures in the city and one of the most favored and sought after tourist destinations. The temple is situated near the Laxmi Darwaza and Laxmi tal. It was built during the reign of Queen Lakshmi Bai. This marvelous monument had witnessed some of the most significant incidences of the history.

This temple is really a very nice and not to miss place to visit during the tour to the city. You will also witness that several devotees still come to the temple to take blessings of the goddess.

Another must visit attraction of the city is Barua Sagar that is known for exhibiting strikingly beautiful views. This historically significant place is situated in close proximity with Jhansi. It derived its name from Barua Sagar Tal and it is two hundred and sixty years old.It is also considered as a holy place as it there is a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga. The temple is popularly known as Jarai ka math and it exhibits a perfect example of Pratihara architecture.
