Malta is a country with many things to see and do, as you will realise when you go on your Malta 5 star luxury break. During your luxury break in this excellent holiday destination, you’ll want to visit a few of the highlights, so here are a few that you should not miss during your next holiday.

The Hypogeum

The Hypogeum in Paola is a world class archaeological site that is an absolute must for any history fans. Visit this on your Malta 5 star holiday and you’ll find a spectacular underground temple, which is in fact the only one of its kind in the world that dates back to prehistoric times. As a result it has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hypogeum was discovered by accident in 1902 by workers on a housing development, and was later excavated. It consists of a number of different levels, with areas including the main chamber, the oracle room and the snake pit amongst others. Because it is such a fragile and special ancient monument, the amount of visitors allowed in each day is heavily regulated and you will need to book well in advance if you want to visit it.

Ghar Dalam

Ghar Dalam is a large cave that is one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Malta. 5 star luxury breaks are all about getting the most out of the trip, and this will provide you with a fascinating insight into the Malta’s history. As well as being an interesting tour, it is also significant because of the remains that have been found here, which include animal bones and human artefacts. From these remains archaeologists have discovered that humans settled in the cave when they arrived 7,400 years ago. More recently, the cave was used as an air raid shelter in the Second World War. The cave is 144 metres deep, but visitors are not allowed to go down this far. Still, it provides a fascinating insight into the history of Malta and the kids will love it too.

The Citadel in Gozo

The citadel located in Victoria in Gozo was built in the late medieval period to provide protection from raiders. Right up until the 17th century, citizens of Gozo had to sleep in the citadel for their protection. Now it is an interesting tourist attraction that you should definitely make time to visit during your Malta 5 star break. There is a fascinating street market around the citadel, and the narrow streets surrounding it are great for exploring. Inside there is a baroque cathedral which is worth visiting, along with a number of museums to enjoy.

Marsaxlokk

Marsaxlokk is one of oldest ports in Malta, and is now very popular with tourists. If you’re looking for Malta 5 star luxury, one of the best ways to experience this is through delicious local cuisine. As Marsaxlokk is the biggest fishing village in Malta, you are almost guaranteed to try some of the delicious freshly caught fish that it is famous for, and there are lots of seafood restaurants to explore. It is located in the south east of Malta about half an hour from Valletta, and most of the fish from the country comes from here. There is a tourist market every day, and there’s even a small beach which is a good spot for diving. Also look out for the luzzus, the small boats decorated with the Eye of Osiris to provide protection against evil.
