Malta At War Museum
If you are interested in the Second World War in any way then the Malta At War Museum in Birgu will provide you with a few fascinating hours. This is the story of Malta’s war, told through interesting artefacts, film footage, guides and memorabilia. The whole museum is very well presented, and there are also underground tunnels and galleries to explore, where you will learn all about the people who were forced to stay in these during bombing raids. All in all it provides a fascinating insight into the Maltese war effort.
National Museum of Natural History
Making a change from war, if you are looking for something a bit more natural on your Malta 5 star holiday then you should head to the National Museum of Natural History in Mdina. Here you will find out all about Malta’s important natural heritage, and you’ll be presented with specimens from all the animal groups including mammals, insects, reptiles and birds, as well as collections of fossils. Run by Heritage Malta, the museum is located in the Magisterial Palace of Justice, and opened to the public in 1973. It focuses especially on birds and plants endemic to Malta, including the national bird, the blue rock thrush, and the national plant, the Maltese centaury. You’ll also be able to find out all about the geology of Malta to top off a fascinating afternoon.
Maritime Museum
The Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa shares with you the fascinating history of Malta’s maritime heritage, adding some interesting local history to your Malta 5 star holiday. It is located in the Old Naval Bakery, and as well as exploring Malta’s maritime heritage it takes a global look at seafaring and its importance for the world. On display you’ll find cannons, a Roman anchor, and a bust of Queen Victoria amongst many other fascinating artefacts, and it will be of interest to anyone who would like to find out more about the important seafaring history of the islands.
National Museum of Archaeology
Malta has a fascinating and important archaeological heritage, and this museum in Valletta is the perfect place to find out all about it. Featuring a collection of artefacts dating back over 7,000 years, this is where you can find out all about the prehistory of the islands. Located in the Auberge de Provence, which used to be a palace, the impressive setting is nothing compared to the fascinating exhibits inside; including collections from the world famous Megalithic Temples which date back roughly 5,000 years, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
