  • And She Said “Dah-di-dah-dah dit di-di-dit” or “y-e-s” By:-Jeff Richmond
Where the Lightbulb was Not Invented Impulse is to adventure what alcohol is to good judgment—it overcomes rational barriers. Consider my most recent impulse travel adventure to the Edison National Historic Site in West Orange, New Jersey. It really was not the day to go. New Jersey was in the middle of an official heat wave. There was the threat of thunderstorms across the state. I could drive the 80 miles to the site only to be caught in really lousy weather—not compatible with my goal to take many photographs. And I would certainly have to deal with New Jersey traffic, tolls and pot holes (makes you wonder what they do with the tolls and taxes the collect in New Jersey). Still, I am helpless technology junkie who has also developed an interest in history, and Thomas Edison, with more than 1,000 patents—known best for his invention of the electric light bulb—was certainly on the cusp of 20th Century technology. So ignoring the weather reports and overcoming my own stagnant inertia I entered the West Orange address in my GPS, gathered my note pad and camera and climbed in the truck.
  • In the Lofty Steps of Presidents By:-Jeff Richmond
There are only a few places in the world where you can follow, touch, and share the experiences of eleven U.S. Presidents—the White House is one; Wright Patterson Air Force Base is another. The National Museum of the United States Air Force may be the largest collection of military aircraft and aviation artifacts in the world. The collection includes everything from super-secret, super fast aircraft to weapons, documents, photographs, and personal items. There are more than 400 aircraft and 68,000 items in the museum’s collection. Largest or not, the museum has a truly unique collection tucked away in an older military hangar on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. These are aircraft that have played key and memorable roles in the post World War II history of the nation and the world, at the very highest level. This is the Presidential Collection.
  • Yorktown -- Eleven Days to Independence By:-Jeff Richmond
In October 1781, preparation, weather, allies, and a measure of luck came together in Yorktown, Virginia, to seal the American colonies’ bid for independence from England. The Yorktown Colonial National Historic Park is a testament to and reminder of our struggle for independence. Today, only the restored earthworks that mark the siege lines dug by both the Americans and the British suggest that the Yorktown Battlefield is anything but a peaceful, pastoral setting.
  • Civil War Battle Rages in Southern New Jersey By:-Jeff Richmond
The headlines might have read, “Cape May, September 13, 1863 – Confederate Soldiers Rout Union Troops in Cold Springs Village.” Cold Springs Village is an early American open-air living museum. Located three miles north of Cape May City, it recreates life as it was in the early 1800s. This weekend, however, Cold Springs Village would be overrun by a Civil War battle. The town center was deserted and quiet. News of the impending battle must have traveled through the streets of the village. Residents had taken refuge in their homes or fled town.
  • Naval Aviation History through the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum By:-Jeff Richmond
Naval Air Station Wildwood officially began operation as a dive bomber training facility, preparing carrier-based flight crews for duty in World War II battles raging in the Atlantic and Pacific. Today, Hangar #1 is a museum dedicated the 42 men that died during training between 1943 and the war’s end in 1945. Unlike many museums where the aircraft are displayed behind restrictive rope barriers, you can not only walk up to, examine, and touch the aircraft, but most aircraft have steps and platforms that let you to look into open cockpits and view the instruments and controls closely. This is an opportunity to really look into the pilot’s “office” and get a sense of what it must have been like to take these aircraft into battle. The open arrangement of the aircraft and displays allows each person to create his own experience, viewing aircraft and displays in any order desired.
  • Batsto, New Jersey – A Village Grows with the Country By:-Jeff Richmond
Historic Batsto Village—located on Rt 542 in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, about an hour-and-half east and south of Philadelphia—has recreated itself several times during the course of American history. It was founded in 1766 as the Batsto Iron Works to take advantage of the iron-rich bog ore mined from the banks of rivers and streams in the area. Batsto soon became an industry village and an important supplier of cannon balls and wartime hardware to the Continental Army during the American Revolution. After the revolution, the foundry produced heavy cookware, stoves and fireplace inserts. At its peak productivity in the 1850s, as many as a 1,000 people lived and worked in Batsto Village. There are more than 40 homes, barns, mills and other structures preserved at the historic site, including the impressive mansion. Many of the building are open and offer an intimate look into both work and life in the village.
